However, with the great depression and loss of public interest in rocketry, the VfR faced declining membership and financial problems. In 1932, they approached the army and arranged a demonstration launch. Though it failed, the army nevertheless offered a contract. After a tumultuous internal debate, the VfR rejected the contract.
